Edinson Cavani: Told he is staying put

Paris Saint Germain chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi insists the club are not looking to sell forward Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguay international was quoted ahead of the midweek Champions League win over Chelsea suggesting he could look to leave if PSG continued to play him out wide, rather than as a central striker.

However, Al-Khelaifi is insistent that PSG are not looking to lose a player they only signed from Napoli last summer – paying over £60million for the privilege.

“Cavani is very important for us, he is very professional and he gives everything. I appreciate that,” said Al-Khelaifi.

“If he wants to change positions, it is not his decision, it is the coach and he understands that.

“He is there to play where the coach decides. He may discuss with the staff and the club but the decision will be remaining with us.

“He is a star for the club and of course it remains.”

One of the clubs strongly linked with Cavani has long been Real Madrid, but their coach Carlo Ancelotti has distanced them from a summer move.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, Ancelotti said: “Cavani is a great player, but we already have Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale: this squad does not need to have a player like him.”
