Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski moved into the lead of the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal after soloing victory on stage two.

The Omega Pharma – Quick-Step rider broke clear of the peloton 5km from the finish and although Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida), Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Eduard Prades (OFM-Quinta da Lixa) all set off in pursuit, they were unable to catch the in-form 23-year-old.

He crossed the line six seconds ahead of runner-up Costa and third-placed Contador to secure his second win of the season, and now leads the general classification.
