Ally McCoist: Still unbeaten this season
Ally McCoist is still refusing to count out Rangers blowing their unbeaten League One record, despite closing to within four matches of an unblemished season.
The Light Blues boss watched his men rack up their 30th victory of the third-tier campaign with a 3-0 victory over Forfar at Ibrox.
Rangers now have to see out Saturday’s trip to Stenhousemuir, followed by
clashes with Ayr, Stranraer and Dunfermline to confirm their first season
without defeat since they won all 18 top-flight fixtures back in 1898-99.
But having watched midfielder Arnold Peralta add to his injury woes by limping off with a hamstring injury, McCoist remains cautious.
He said: “The unbeaten run is very important now. We wouldn’t talk about it before but the longer it goes, the greater the chance of it happening.
“We have some difficult games coming up and it looks as though we are another player down, so we are definitely being tested with our numbers at the moment.
“We are going to a team who are fighting to get into the play-off positions on Saturday, but of course we want to go through the season unbeaten – just like the four teams we have left to play will be very hopeful they can be the first to take out scalp, so there is plenty to play for.
“I’m still loath to talk about it but it would be a great achievement if we could remain unbeaten. It is now the target.
“Is it irrelevant the league it happens in? I think so. I’m not for a minute going to compare it to the Arsenal side who did the same thing (2003-2004) but for anyone to achieve that it would be a massive thing.
“However, there are still four extremely difficult games to come.”
Though the scoreline belied an oft-lacklustre performance, Loons assistant boss Iain Campbell praised the hosts, saying: “You can’t take anything away from Rangers.
“They get a bit of stick but going this long unbeaten is not easy. It’s easy for teams like ourselves to set yourself up not to lose and Rangers have come up against that all season.
“There is a big pressure on their players to perform and over the piece I think they have done that. Tonight again they were the better team.”
