Chile’s capital Santiago was rocked by a massive earthquake on Monday causing alarm along the Pacific Coast without any serious damage.
The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.9-magnitude centred about 85 miles from the capital city and 22 miles away from coastal city of Valparaiso.
According to USGS the quake was powerful enough to cause severe damage.
USGS added the quake was 15.5 miles deep, below the sea level, and office buildings in Santiago swayed for about half a minute.
Residents closer to the epicentre were seen moving in panic to higher ground fearing tsunami. However, soon the calm was restored.
A 26-year-old nurse, Paloma Salamo, said the quake was short but powerful.
She was in her clinic in Vin a del Mar when the quake struck the place.
President Michelle Bachelet said, “So far there has been no human loss nor significant damage.”
The president also praised the people for evacuating in orderly way immediately after the quake struck the region.
Initially tsunami warning was issued but was canceled soon by the officials in Valparaiso. No structural damage was reported too in the coastal city.
Cell phone networks were reported down in some areas.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported half a foot of tsunami waves, which is small.
Video footage showed objects falling from shelves in a store in Valparaiso and rocks falling too on the roads.
The quake was felt in Argentina too.
According to Interior Minister Mario Fernandez some landslides too have been reported but situation is pretty normal.
