British man Accused Of Smuggling Cannabis Into Bali

A British man has been arrested at an airport in Bali after allegedly being found with 3.55 grams of cannabis in a cigarette case. The 26-year old freelance photographer was arrested after arriving on an AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Denpasar, Bali on Wednesday.

A day earlier, customs at Ngurah Rai airport also arrested a 34-year-old Chilean man allegedly found with 3 grams (0.1 ounces) of cannabis seeds called ‘The Bulldog Seeds’. They were filmed after the arrests while handcuffed and wearing custody uniforms. Briton and Chilean arresten

Both men appeared before local media at the customs office near Ngurah Rai airport on Bali, where the case against them was heard.

The pair will both be charged with possession under Indonesia’s tough anti-drugs law and could face up to a maximum of 15 years in prison.

Agung Rai Parwata, police investigator, said: ‘The second suspect is a British citizen who was arrested because (he was) carrying cannabis from Thailand to Denpasar (Bali).’ Syarif Hidayat, head of Bali Customs, said: ‘Airport customs in Bali have arrested a British citizen, initials Z-W-T, age 26 years old, working as a freelance photographer, sitting on my left.’

Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws and convicted smugglers are sometimes executed. Eighteen convicts, mostly foreigners, have been executed under President Joko Widodo, who took office in October 2014 and declared a war on illegal drugs. More than 150 people are currently on death row, mostly for drug crimes. About one-third of them are foreigners.

The Foreign Office said it was assisting a British man following his arrest in Indonesia.Bali is an island and province of Indonesia, which has some of the toughest drug laws in the world.News agency AFP said sentences for smugglers who carry five or more grams include the death penalty.

The Foreign Office website also warns the Indonesian authorities have “a zero-tolerance policy on drugs” and those caught face long prison sentences or the death penalty.

According to one media report, Mr Thanoon was arrested after he had arrived from Thailand and has admitted being a recreational cannabis user.His Instagram page showed that he had previously been travelling in China, Mongolia and Hong Kong.
