Canada has a population of about 35 million and still there’s a challenge to its economic growth as most of the people are aging. To overcome economical crisis in future the government has suggested an increase to quota of immigrants.
The government said Monday to be allowing 300,000 economic immigrants in 2017 to help spur economic growth for top companies.
The announced quota also maintains this year’s target and most of them will be a new baseline for admission of permanent residents.
Even though the target is same as that of current year but it has increased in the average of immigrants admitted from 2011 to 2015 that stood at 259,542.
Briefing to the reporters the immigration minister John McCallum said the latest quota laid foundation for future immigration growth. He added, “I do believe it is true that more immigrants for Canada would be a good policy for demographic reasons.”
Aging population is not the only problem of Canada. Many other developed countries too are suffering the same with threat to economic growth in future.
A recommendation has come from economic advisory council to finance minister Bill Morneau to hike the annual immigration target to 450,000 in the next five years. This will help the country in attracting top talent to Canadian companies.
However, McCallum clarified the recommended number is conceivable for some date in future, but obviously not for next year.
Apart from the increase plan of economic immigrants Canada has also planned out to decrease number of refugees from 55,800 to 40,000.
