‘Catching Fire’ wins best film at MTV Movie Awards

LOS ANGELES — Fast and loose and all over the place.

That was the vibe of Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, a blockbuster-friendly awards show with winners selected by fan votes.

Dystopian fiction ruled the night, with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire taking home the ceremony’s biggest award: movie of the year.

Star Josh Hutcherson took a moment to thank the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee in the franchise.

“I know if Philip were here he would think this was really cool,” said Hutcherson. “We think about him every day on set.”

Jared Leto continued his winning streak for Dallas Buyers Club, picking up an award for best onscreen transformation. Like many attendees, Leto arrived in the nick of time from the Coachella music festival.

“Is anyone going back to Coachella? Because I need a ride back,” he said.

How has life changed since winning at the Oscars? “Robert Redford called me the other day,” he said backstage, saying the legendary actor and director gave him some advice.

Earlier, Hutcherson had made another appearance onstage, winning best male performance for Catching Fire, and Jonah Hill took home best comedic performance for Wolf of Wall Street.

“I used to watch this awards show at home with all my friends,” said Hill, grasping his golden popcorn.

The best villain even turned green. “I just realized I was the only woman nominated. And I won!” said Mila Kunis, who earned the award for her Wicked Witch in Oz: The Great and Powerful.

The engaged star covered up her small baby bump in a short black dress with a drop waist.

The best shirtless prize went to Zac Efron, who attempted to pick up the award fully clothed, until presenter Rita Ora ripped his denim shirt open to reveal his killer six-pack.

And, as always, the ever popular “Best Kiss” and “Best Fight” categories reigned.

“I’ve combined them into one amazing award!” said host Conan O’Brien in his opening monologue, rolling a sequence of himself and Will Arnett fighting while blowing kisses to each other.

The real best kiss went to the stars of We’re the Millers. Young star Will Poulter accepted the statue for his double makeout with Jennifer Aniston and Emma Roberts.

“Dating two women is hard,” he cracked, while pretending to get a stern text from Aniston.

And best fight? That honor went to Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lilly, who fought the Orcs in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Onstage, Bloom thanked the real Orcs: the stunt men and women “inside each of those gnarly, sweaty, dirty latex suits.”

O’Brien made sure to continuously tip his hat to the MTV generation, even inviting Grumpy Cat to sit in the first row. “(He’s) asleep. A human being is performing for a sleeping pet,” said O’Brien in disdain. “This is the end of civilization as we know it.”

The host also threatened to play long speechmakers off — not with music, but with nude selfies of himself — and debuted Oscar-winning Vines.

“If you didn’t have time to see the big movies we’re celebrating here tonight … we’ve distilled them down to six-second Vine videos,” he said, rolling truncated versions of Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle.

During the two-hour show, Rihanna and Eminem performed their hit Monster together, a humble Channing Tatum picked up the MTV Trailblazer Award and Mark Wahlberg scored the MTV Generation Award.

“This is the ‘you’re too old to come back award,'” the Transformers star joked.

“But you know what? It was a great run.”
