MONTREAL, May 29 (UPI) –A live Avatar show is currently in the works at Cirque du Soleil.
Director James Cameron and 20th Century Fox have teamed up with the live performance group to bring the film to life on stage. The movie is the highest grossing film of all time, and has earned more than $2.7 billion worldwide.
“Avatar remains a phenomenon that continues to inspire people around the globe,” 20th Century Fox CEO Jim Gianopulos said in a statement. “Combining it with the live event ingenuity of Cirque du Soleil is a perfect synthesis of imagination and talent.”
“Over the years, I have discovered the extraordinary talents and imaginations of both the artists and the creative forces behind Cirque du Soleil,” Cameron said separately. “I know we share the common goal of bringing audiences to another level of entertainment experiences. I look forward to doing just that on this project.”
Cirque du Soleil president and CEO Daniel Lamarre told his audience at the C2MTL Commerce + Creativity conference Thursday that he expects the live performance to debut in late 2015.
“Our relationship with Jim Cameron began with my visit at his Avatar cutting room,” he recalled. “I am thrilled that almost 5 years later, Cirque du Soleil will be able to explore the very inspirational Avatar realm for the live stage.”
Cameron and 20th Century Fox also have three Avatar sequels planned. The first is scheduled for release in December 2016.
