Wilson Renwick: Won aboard Clever Cookie
Clever Cookie ran out a ready winner of the Grade Two 1.25 Million Scoop6 Premier Kelso Hurdle on Saturday.
The Peter Niven-trained six-year-old was sent off the 13/8 favourite on the back of a fluent Scottish County Hurdle success last time and never looked like disappointing backers.
Settled off the pace set by Wayne Kavanagh on Fergall, Clever Cookie eased into contention under Wilson Renwick and powered clear for an eight-length success.
Fergall (12/1) held on for second with Sue Smith’s Hit The Top (9/1) third.
Niven said: “He’s only doing what we thought he would do. He’s a slow learner which is why I’m not keen on going to Cheltenham, but he’s getting the hang of it now.
“He’s a strong traveller and I might pop him on the Flat just to see how he gets on, he’s got a few gears.
“My mum bred him and she’s just had a little op so this will speed up her recovery.
“I don’t think he enjoyed the ground today, it was tacky. I would say we’re looking at Aintree rather than Cheltenham, but today was the plan.
“He’s the best I’ve trained and one of the best I’ve sat on.”
