Hundreds of millions of people still uses Internet on 2G connections and such situation is mostly in the emerging markets. Facebook has come up with a new initiative for such users and help its employees sample the experience of using the platform on slow mobile internet connections.
The initiative is titled as 2G Tuesday and it will allow its employees to slow down the mobile internet speed to 2G level for an hour. However, this will be optional and it will not last for the full day.
Business Insider reports the new initiative is essential as about one billion of monthly active users of Facebook live outside the US and Europe. Using the social platform on a 2G connection can be a completely different service, but unless one uses the same down speed it is not possible to understand the problems.
Citing an email from Facebook spokesperson, TechCrunch writes on slow connection it takes about two minutes to download a webpage and so it is important to be aware of it by using 2G connection before building the best experience for them.
According to the engineering director of Facebook, Tom Alison, using the platform on 2G internet connection has surely tested his patience and it was like parts of the webpage is broken.
Earlier this summer Facebook launched a stripped down version of its service for Android iOS to benefit users in the emerging markets.
Facebook has also kicked off an initiative, internet.org service, for the emerging markets to overcome such difficulties and also no-internet regions.
