Gary Carr cast as Downton Abbey’s first black character

Gary Carr has been cast as the first black character in ‘Downton Abbey’.

The ‘Death in Paradise’ star will play charming and charismatic jazz singer Jack Ross in the ITV period drama’s fourth series, which will also see former ‘EastEnders’ actor Nigel Harman and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa make their debuts in the show.

Gareth Neame, Carnival Films’ Managing Director, said: ”We are delighted to introduce another fantastic, dynamic character to ‘Downton Abbey’. His addition will bring interesting twists to the drama which we can’t wait for viewers to see in Series four.”

Other new faces arriving in Downton include Tom Cullen, who has been cast as Lord Gillingham, an old childhood friend of Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery), while Dame Harriet Walter will play Lady Shackleton, a friend of the Dowager Countess (Dame Maggie Smith).

Series regulars Hugh Bonneville and Jim Carter will also reprise their roles, and Shirley MacLaine will return as Martha Levinson.

But Siobhan Finneran will not be returning to the country house after recently revealing she has quit her role as Lady Grantham’s cunning maid Sarah O’Brien, who she has portrayed since the show began in September 2010.
