How Britney Spears Avoided Awkward Run-in with Justin Timberlake

Britney Spears didn’t just celebrate a win yesterday for Favorite Pop Artist at the People’s Choice Awards, but her first red carpet appearance with her boyfriend David Lucado.

But it became a tricky affair considering that her ex-boyfriend of a century and 3,500 Tiger Beat issues ago Justin Timberlake was also there to collect a bevy of trophies—Favorite Pop Album, Favorite Male Artist, and Favorite R&B Artist.

Britney’s strategy to keep this whole situation—watching her ex-boyfriend basically sweep the entire telecast out from under itself with his presence—at bay was to make sure Dave could stand on his own beside her.

Traditionally only caught in sweatpants and sweaters with college crests and insignias, she dressed him up in designer wears, giving him a well-groomed edge that left him practically unrecognizable. He may not have anywhere near the same achievements as Justin, but he still looked like a winner in his own right anyway.
