Jay-Z ”nailed” ‘The Great Gatsby’ soundtrack, according to Baz Luhrmann.
The rapper put his own modern twist on the score for the big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale, and the film’s director believes Jay-Z really understood the aspirational tone of the story.
The filmmaker said: ”He totally nailed that the book was aspirational. That the book was really about, if you’ve got a cause, you can move towards a green light. That you don’t reach it isn’t the point; that you aspire is.”
The drama – which grossed more than $50 million in its opening weekend in the US last week – is a lavish throwback to the decadence of the 1920s and centres around mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his infatuation with Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).
Luhrmann revealed he was surprised the hip-hop mogul understood the film’s central message so clearly when he saw the rough cut for the first time.
The director told MTV News: ”Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz were two of the first people to see a rough cut of the film. Jay watched it, and he was fantastic.
”He and Swizz were talking. I’m like, ‘What are they talking about?’ And at the end, [Jay-Z] said, ‘This story is not about how Jay Gatsby made his money; it’s is he a good person or not.’ ”
