Liam Keniry was injured following a fall at Chepstow.

Liam Keniry was stretchered off the track following a nasty fall in the 32Red.com Maiden Stakes at Chepstow.

Keniry was riding the Tony Carroll-trained Rowlestone Express when she appeared to slip approaching the closing stages of the six-furlong heat.

The filly was quickly up and while Carroll reported Keniry to be conscious, the rider was taken by ambulance to the weighing room for further assessment.

Carroll told At The Races: “He was certainly conscious, I spoke him when he was on the stretcher. They were a little bit concerned with a few back pains he had earlier on, but he said to me he thought he felt OK.

“(There was nothing obviously broken) to my knowledge. Jockeys generally know what’s wrong and what isn’t. He seemed to think he was OK.

“It was as though he just took a step and was gone. The ground is soft, she’s quite a big filly and has put a hole in the ground where she’s come down.”

Clerk of the course Keith Ottesen felt Keniry’s fall was not due to any problems with the testing ground at the Welsh venue.

He said : “We have watched it back a few times and she’s gone down pretty quick, as Tony said. They are going in quite deep, it’s not loose or anything. We repaired the ground and put the divots back. It’s as though she’s just taken a bad step, dived into it and lost her footing that way.”

Jockeys Steve Drowne and Luke Morris were part of a deputation who headed on to the track to check the ground following Keniry’s accident, but they both felt conditions were perfectly acceptable.

Drowne said: “It looks fine. Touch wood, it’s hopefully just one of those things.”

Morris added: “It’s soft ground, it walks fine and safe – I’m sure it’s fine.”
