In 2012 a report in The New York Post revealed that Lady Gaga battles bulimia, which is an emotional disorder and is characterized by a distorted body image. A person always things of losing weight under such phenomenon and starts fasting or take over self-induced vomiting or else purging.
The “Born This Way” singer herself revealed the suffering then while attending a conference at a school in Los Angeles. She was answering to a question asked by a girl, who revealed her own body image problems. She was asked how Gaga maintains self-confidence.
Lady Gaga said, “I used to throw up all the time in high school. So I’m not that confident…Weight is still a struggle… Every video I’m in, every magazine cover, they stretch you — they make you perfect.”
Gaga is correct, that eating disorders most often affect girls; however, body image problems do not discriminate between genders. In fact, there is increasing research on males with eating disorders and body image problems, especially when body image or weigh can impact sports performance like with wrestling.
Sexuality can also play a role in increasing risk factors: gay men can be especially impacted by eating disorders and pressures to seek unattainable physical perfection.
The Huffington Post reported that Gaga posted an online forum on her littlemonsters.com website called “Body Revolution” to help combat body image insecurities.
The singer wrote, “Be brave and post a photo of you that celebrates your triumph over insecurities.” And, just like with Ke$ha, many fans have been supportive, and joined Gaga in her brave body-image battle.
