Charlie Longsdon: Could run Vulcanite at Royal Ascot

Vulcanite may run at Royal Ascot before a possible trip to Ireland for the Galway Plate.

Charlie Longsdon’s seven-year-old returned to winning ways in a decent race at Market Rasen on Sunday and could also go back to Lincolnshire for one of their big races in the summer.

As Vulcanite was a smart performer on the level in his days with Ralph Beckett, his rating of 103 means he will qualify for some of the better races.

“It was great to see Vulcanite win so well yesterday at Market Rasen. He has always been a good horse, but certainly lost his way a bit over the last 18 months,” said Longsdon on his website, www.charlielongsdonracing.com.

“The wind operation has clearly helped, but most importantly the better ground and the sun on his back have been the making of his return to form. He made, what looked like a decent field seem fairly ordinary and I see the time was four seconds faster than standard, when the rest of the day, the times were around 10 seconds slower than standard.

“The question, is where we head with him now. At this time of year, there are not many races for the better horses.

“The obvious races in the middle of July to look at are at Galway and Market Rasen, but they are two months away. Before that it is difficult to find a race, especially as you want to be competing for some decent prize money when the horse is rated almost 140.

“It might mean I have to run him back over hurdles or even on the Flat. Being rated 100 on the Flat, we might even look at one of the staying races at Royal Ascot.

“A good problem to have!”
