Even though Britain vows to open up for business post Brexit, it does not seem to have impressed Microsoft. The company has lately announced to shut down Skype’s London offices and further it will lay off many employees.
Microsoft added to be terminating headquarters of a rare European technology champion too.
However, the technology giant added will be entering into a consultation process to offer some help to the affected employees by the redundancies.
The company said, “We are deeply committed to doing everything we can to help those impacted through the process.”
Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5bn and currently employs about 400 people in the London offices.
Skype was originally founded in 2003.
Tech London Advocates industry group founder Russ Shaw said the move by Microsoft is disappointing.
Shaw was earlier vice-president of Skype Emea. He left the team when the platform was acquired by Microsoft. He added Skype is one of the iconic technology businesses in Europe and also a genuine unicorn.
Former employees find the move unsurprising as over the period of past three years many executives have been departing silently.
One of the former employees shared his experience at Skype on Quora earlier this year in April. He said it was unusual for him to witness a Skype manager getting replaced by a Microsoft manager.
In its history Microsoft has acquired about 150 acquisitions, but most of those have been dismantled and killed including Nokia handset division of Finland and aQuantive advertising metrics company. Isn’t it? Share your views.
