Brian Elliott: Shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins

Brian Elliott won a goaltending battle with Marc-Andre Fleury as the St Louis Blues beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-0.

Elliott saved all 33 shots he faced, meaning David Backes’ tip-in of Alexander Steen’s shot proved decisive as the playoff-qualified Western Conference leaders joined Eastern counterparts the Boston Bruins on 103 points.

The Blues’ penalty kill also played a major role after the sin-binnings of TJ Oshie and Jaden Schwartz in quick succession gave Pittsburgh a five-on-three powerplay, during which they were limited to three shots at goal.

Pittsburgh are six points back on 97, the fifth-best record in the league after the Anaheim Ducks improved to 99 with a 6-2 win over the Florida Panthers.

Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and two assists, taking him to 30 goals for the season and 600 points for his NHL career. Corey Perry emulated his captain’s efforts on the night, while Teemu Selanne added a goal and an assist.

The Ducks jumped two points clear of the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference standings after the latter lost 2-0 to the Nashville Predators. The goals came from Mike Fisher and Gabriel Bourque while Pekka Rinne made 29 saves.

The Minnesota Wild lie seventh in the Conference following their 4-3 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Gustav Nyquist fired Denver 2-0 ahead in the first period but the Wild recovered to lead 3-2. Tomas Tatar forced overtime but Matt Moulson settled it in Minnesota’s favour.

The Toronto Maple Leafs completed a miserable week with their fifth straight defeat, 3-2 to the New Jersey Devils.

Damien Brunner, Patrick Elias and Jon Merrill gave the Devils what proved to be an unassailable lead, despite goals from Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel.

The Vancouver Canucks beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 while the New York Islanders won 2-0 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
