Chelsea have confirmed that defender Kenneth Omeruo has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 20-year-old Nigerian international is yet to actually play a game for Chelsea, having joined from Standard Liege in 2012.

He has instead been getting first-team experience away from Stamford Bridge with Dutch outfit ADO Den Haag and this season with Championship Middlesbrough – where he turned in a number of impressive displays.

Omeruo, who has also established himself in Nigeria’s squad and is going to the World Cup finals, had one-year left on his current deal but has now pledged his long-term future to Chelsea with a new four-year contract.

“I’m thrilled to sign a new contract with Chelsea and am really excited about the future,” he told the club’s website.

“To play at such a fantastic club is a real honour for me and I’ll be working incredibly hard to be successful.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in England so far and can’t wait to get going.”

Middlesbrough have already confirmed their interest in taking Omeruo back on-loan next season.
