Monty Panesar: Reportedly failed to turn up for a team meeting

Essex spinner Monty Panesar has been disciplined by the county over poor timekeeping.

The club confirmed that the left-armer was dropped for the County Championship clash with Glamorgan, which started on Sunday.

But Panesar will be considered for Friday’s NatWest T20 Blast fixture against Surrey.

Essex confirmed the punishment in a statement, although they did not give details of his latest misdemeanour.

However, reports suggest the England bowler failed to show up for a team meeting on Sunday morning, and his place in the squad for the Glamorgan encounter went to Tom Craddock.

The statement read: “Essex Cricket can confirm that Monty Panesar has been disciplined by the club after breaching team rules for timekeeping.

“Panesar has subsequently been dropped from the playing squad for the LV= County Championship match versus Glamorgan.

“He will available for team selection for the following NatWest T20 Blast match on Friday 6 June against Surrey.

“The club will make no further comment on this matter.”

Panesar was warned by Essex over his conduct earlier this season, with coach Paul Grayson unhappy with his body language and attitude.

He also had to be restrained by team-mates after being involved in an angry altercation with Derbyshire’s Billy Godleman in April before being warned over his behaviour by the umpires.

Panesar was initially signed by Essex on loan from Sussex last season shortly after he had been arrested and fined for urinating on doormen outside a nightclub.

Essex awarded the spinner a two-year contract, and his form this season has been encouraging and led to speculation he may earn an England recall.

Panesar has taken 167 wickets in 50 Tests, but he was dropped after England’s defeat to Australia in the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne last December.
