Parbold: Drops down to six furlongs for the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock

Richard Fahey does not expect a drop in trip to inconvenience Parbold in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.

The Dandy Man colt showed quality form over six furlongs as a juvenile, notably filling the runner-up spot in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and going down narrowly in the Gimcrack at York.

He kicked off the new campaign with a fair effort to finish fifth in the Free Handicap at Newmarket over seven furlongs and could be counted an unlucky loser when beaten just half a length into fourth over the same course and distance a fortnight ago.

Fahey said: “We’re coming back a furlong with him and on his best six-furlong form he’d have every chance.

“He was a bit unlucky at Newmarket last time. He probably should have won, but it was nobody’s fault. He went for a gap, the gap closed when he got there and that was that.

“He’s been in good form since, we’re happy with him and the ground shouldn’t be an issue. He’s the sort of horse you’d run on any ground.”

Parbold is the highest-rated runner in an eight-strong field, with Richard Hannon’s Shamshon perhaps his biggest danger following his taking victory over five furlongs at York’s May meeting.

The Wiltshire handler told his website, www.richardhannonracing.co.uk:

“Frankie (Dettori) goes up to Haydock to ride Shamshon at Haydock.

“He bounced back well to win at York recently, but the ground would be the worry as his one disappointment came in the Mill Reef last year when it rode soft.”
