Oscar Pistorius: Back in court

Oscar Pistorius: Back in court

The trial of Oscar Pistorius continues in South Africa this morning.

The paralympic athlete pleaded not guilty to the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp when the trial opened in Pretoria yesterday.

A neighbour of Pistorius, Michelle Burger, told the court that she heard “bloodcurdling screams” from a woman followed by shots on the night when Steenkamp was killed.

Pistorius has admitted the shooting but claims he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.

Speaking from Pretoria, Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt told Sky Sports News: “There’ll be more evidence today from that first witness Michelle Burger, who was given a very hard time by Pistorious’s lawyer. There’ll be more of that cross-examination.

“We’ll then hear from her husband. The Burgers live on the estate next door to the estate where Oscar Pistorius lived but they were only 170m away from his house so they’ll talk about gunshots being heard, screams before, then gunshots, then more screams.

“Mrs Burger said yesterday that her husband heard more gunshots than she did so it’ll be interesting to hear his evidence.

“After that there’ll be more witnesses from the estate and neighbouring estate. One witness who lived opposite Oscar Pistorius will say she heard talking “like fighting” before hearing gunshots.

“Oscar Pistorius’s gardener is on the witness list, so too three security guards who were on duty that night a year ago when Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend.”

Pistorius’ lawyer, Kenny Oldwage, had described Steenkamp’s death on day one of the trial as a “tragic accident”.

Pistorius, denying the murder charge, said: “This allegation is denied in the strongest terms. We were in a loving relationship.”

Sky News will be providing in-depth coverage of the Oscar Pistorius trial.
