Today at 12:48pm GMT, the team that originally started out as three reached the South Pole as one in the Virgin Money South Pole Allied Challenge.”I’m so proud, I’m so chuffed and I’m so privileged to be here with all these guys and girls,” Prince Harry said, according to Sky News royal reporter Paul Harrison.
“I think we’ll be having a few whiskies tonight.”
On Monday, it was decided that the teams – UK, USA and Commonwealth – would trek together, eliminating the race element in favor of raising morale and a united effort.
The trek was not without it’s share of hurdles. One teammate suffered altitude sickness and fluid in his lungs, and had to be pulled out of the race temporarily for medical treatment. The trek was suspended at one point due to severe weather conditions.
In the end, the mission raised awareness and funds for Walking With the Wounded, benefiting injured servicemen and women.
