“Today‘s event – Commissioner Diana Bracco said – is the first in our journey towards Padiglione Italia, started on 3rd August 2012. The first two stages in such journey were “Disegnare l‘Italia“, in November 2012, when we presented the concept of “Vivaio“ which inspired the international design award of Padiglione Italia. The second stage was “Costruire l‘Italia“, in April 2013, when the winner of the Award was announced with an overwhelming victory over the other 68 entrants. Since then, we have focussed our efforts on the development of the contents of the exhibition. Lots of cues came from the cycle of inter-regional workshops on participatory design, which we organised with the Conferenza delle Regioni, ANCI and the Chambers of Commerce. Now, we want to give back to Italy what we have taken from its regions. The theme of the Expo, “Feeding the planet. Energy for life“, is perfect for Italy and for its talents. An Italy we want to show in its ability of building the future“.
Marco Balich the Artistic Director presented the contents of Padiglione Italia inspired by the concept of Vivaio, the metaphor chosen by Italy to respond to the big challenge of EXPO 2015. “We have talked about what is soon to become our Home, the home of Italian Identity. The Padiglione Italia will focus on Italian identity and on the strengths that we wish to express in an endeavour that looks prevalently towards our future. We decided to think of the Padiglione Italia as an entertaining journey through places, stories and challenges, presented in a way that is exciting for everyone, and that stimulates debate on Italy‘s role in the world: what we are aiming for is to inspire a sense of pride in our Country. – concluded Balich, adding – Anyone coming to visit us, will also see our icon: a huge structure representing the Tree of Life, a tree that collects our best seeds and carries them upwards, to offer them all to the world.“
The plan for the “Tree of Life”, a 35-metre-high interactive wood and steel construction, which changes at different times of the day, creating an interactive show of lights, colours and music, was also presented. Balich also revealed the journey that visitors will go through along the Cardus, a paved avenue, 35 metres wide and 325 metres long, which will host exhibitions and institutional events, showcasing Italy’s variety and wealth.
Expo 2015 is open in Milan from 1st May to 31stOctober 2015
