Six people were killed Tuesday afternoon in New Jersey City when two suspects opened fire. Neighborhood was brought to standstill and schools were locked down for hours as a precaution.
One police officer named Detective Joseph Seals died in the shootout too. He was 40 and father of five, said city mayor Steven Fulop.
The mayor added one another police officer was injured by the gunfire.
Bystanders filming the incident on their mobile phones said loud volleys of gunfire were heard at regular intervals at around 2 p.m. at JC Kosher Supermarket, located at 223 MLK Drive.
An employee at a nearby liquor store said the gunfire was consistent for about an hour in the afternoon and it was like firecrackers going off.
United States President Donald Trump tweeted, “Just received a briefing on the horrific shootout that took place in Jersey City, NJ. Our thoughts & prayers are w/ the victims & their families during this very difficult & tragic time. We will continue to monitor the situation as we assist local & state officials on the ground.”
