Tim Jarvis has been granted a trainer’s licence following a meeting with the Licensing Committee of the British Horseracing Authority.

Jarvis, son of Alan Jarvis, had seen his application turned down last month by the BHA, but exercised his right for a reassessment.

In March, Jarvis senior, whose career spanned over 40 years, lost his permission to train under the BHA’s ‘fit and proper person’ rule relating to a debt owed to Doncaster Bloodstock Sales.

A statement from Licensing Committee read: “The committee has decided that on all the evidence now before it, that Mr Timothy Jarvis is a suitable person to hold a trainer’s licence.

“In view of that evidence it is likely that Mr Timothy Jarvis will run a training operation independently from his father, Mr Alan Jarvis.”

However, a number of conditions were imposed on the issue of the licence, among them being that Alan Jarvis must not represent his son on the racecourse or to owners, act as a spokesperson to the media or wider racing industry, or be granted access to any BHA-approved yard for which Tim Jarvis holds a licence.

BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey said: “We note the decision of the Licensing Committee. We await the Committee’s full written reasons.

“It was BHA’s position that Tim Jarvis should not be granted a trainer’s licence. This was based on BHA’s concerns about whether he would be training wholly independently from his father, following the decision of both the Licensing Committee and the Appeal Board to find that Alan Jarvis is an unsuitable individual to hold a licence.

“Whilst the Licensing Committee was satisfied of Tim Jarvis’ independence, it did consider it necessary to place extensive conditions on the licence to ensure Alan Jarvis is not involved in the training operation. If any of these conditions are found to have been breached then BHA would take the appropriate action.”
