The high-flying blockbuster of Tom Cruise, Top Gun, is making a comeback after 33 long years and much wait from fans and movie lovers and it is yet to be revealed officially what would be the title of the sequel, but official statement points the release date would be 12 July 2019, a week after Sony’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Paramount Pictures still is found listing the movie name as Top Gun while other sources reveal it will be dubbed as Top Gun: Maverick.
‘Maverick’ was the nickname of the character To Cruise played in the movie.
The Top Gun sequel will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has earlier directed Tom Cruise in 2013 for the film Oblivion.
Officially not much has been revealed about the sequel but it is learned the movie will feature drone technology and Maverick will be a flight instructor, busy training next-gen fighter pilots. The movie will also see exploring of the end of dogfighting era.
The shooting of Top Gun: Maverick to start next year. It will be produced by Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer.
Top Gun was released in 1986 and turned to be a massive hit then grabbing $350 million at global box offices. It was set at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego.
The other stars in the original included Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Tom Skeritt and Anthony Edwards.
In 2015 the United States Library of Congress selected the movie for preservation in the National Film Registry on the basis of being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
