Last month Kickass Torrents (KAT) was seized by the US authorities. It was the largest website for sharing torrents in the world. Today, the search engine feature of Torrentz.eu is disabled. In fact it is not functioning as it used to be earlier.
However, unlike KAT, the domain is still functional. This mean the development is not the result of any legal action.
With the latest development the torrent search box opens in a new window with advertisement for businesses related to the Alibaba Group.
The search box page earlier had a message that read, “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.”
With the development there’s a change in the message and now it reads, “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.”
Usually torrents are linked with illegal file sharing as its technology allows users of the platform to share content on their own computers with other people on it.
Torrents sites including KAT didn’t host any illegal content themselves, but users were allowed to download torrents. This resulted with pointing the file location on the computers of users.
Torrentz was founded in 2003 and initially hosted torrent files, but later it was converted into a torrent search engine. The company is based in Poland.
In the mean time it had also compiled with law enforcement and had to remove links of pirated content. It had index of websites that hosted torrents.
