A win-win new deal has been struck by David Cameron in Washington that has never happened before. UK will ship nuclear waste to the US against uranium import to Europe to help in the fight against cancer.
It is reported about 700kg of highly-enriched uranium will be repacked in the United States after receiving from the Dounreay storage facility in Scotland for sending to the European atomic energy agency. The uranium will be used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers.
David Cameron is currently in Washington attending the International Nuclear Security Summit.
A source in the UK Government said, “He will be announcing a landmark deal we have agreed with the United States and with Euratom, the European atomic energy agency, to turn nuclear waste into cancer-fighting treatment.”
The source added the new deal means largest ever movement for them of highly-enriched uranium sending out of the UK. The US has facilities of processing those and send to them in different form that will be used in European reactors to produce medical isotopes needed in diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and other types of cancers.
The uranium received in Europe would be processed in France and will be used in hospitals across Europe. It is a win-win deal for the UK government.
