US Salmonella Outbreak: 3 Dead, 558 Sickened, Mexico Cucumbers Source Of Infection

Deaths and illenesses are in rise in the US due to Salmonella outbreak. In past one week three people have died and 140 of others have been sickened, said health agency.

The three deaths have ocurred in Arizona, Texas and California.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said 33 states have been affected with the latest Salmonella poona outbreak and the source has been pinpointed toward cucumbers imported from Mexico.

The total number of people sickened due to the Salmonella infection has mounted to 558 and most of the cases have been reported from California followed by Minnesota, Utah, Wisconsin and Arizona.

Meanwhile, San Diego-based Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce has recalled all its cucumbers sold between August 1 and September 3 under the label of ‘Limited Edition.’ Custom Produce Sales too, which sources the product from Andrew & Williamson, have recalled its cucumbers sold under the brand of ‘Fat Boy.’

The Salmonella bacteria causes Salmonellosis disease after infection and it is one of the most frequently foodborne illnesses in the US. It causes diarrheal illness.

Every year about 42,000 cases of salmonellosis infection are reported in the country. However, the figure can go up to 1.2 million if all the cases are diagnosed.

The Salmonella bacteria, characterized as rod-shaped, lives in the intestinal tracts and it is often animal origin such as milk, eggs, poultry and beef. The infections generally gets resolved in a week time and in mild cases professional treatment is not required.

American veterinarian Daniel Elmer Salmon had discovered the Salmonella for the first time.
