AI products like ChatGPT have grabbed enough headlines in recent months. However, there is a difference between hype and real use. A recent study suggests that the platforms are not as popular as they should be. Researchers from the Reuters Institute and Oxford University surveyed 12,000 people across six countries including the United Kingdom to find the reasons. The study revealed that only 2% of British respondents reported using the tools daily. Young people aged 18 to 24 are showing more interest in AI tools.
Lead researcher Dr. Richard Fletcher pointed out a curious mismatch between the hype surrounding AI and the actual public interest in it. Generative AI tools have not become mainstream.
Generative AI triggered fierce competition among tech giants and this led to massive investments in developing similar features. However, they need to yet find the way into people’s daily internet routines. Dr. Fletcher noted that a significant portion of the public remains uninterested in generative AI.

The study also tried to find out public perceptions of generative AI’s potential impacts on society. Optimists envision economic growth and medical breakthroughs. Pessimists warn of existential threats. The majority of respondents expect generative AI to significantly impact society in the next five years. However, when asked about their broader societal impact, people tend to be more skeptical and especially regarding job security and journalism. Dr. Fletcher emphasized the importance of nuanced discussions around AI.
