BREAKING: RENFE Train Derails In Spain; 4 Dead, 47 Injured

A train of rail company RENFE derailed at around 9:25 a.m. local time on its journey from Spanish city of Vigo to Oporto in Portugal. At least four people have been killed apart from driver and 47 others are injured.

The accident took place near O Porrino station in Pontevedra, Galicia.

Television footage showed emergency services and police attended the scene and the injured getting transported by ambulance and helicopter to local hospitals.

RENFE released a press statement confirming 63 people were on board apart from driver and a staff member in the train.

The release further added RENFE and Portuguese National train Service, Oomboios de Portugal, shared the route and the driver on the train was a Portuguese.

Meanwhile, ADIF has ordered for an investigation to the accident to find cause.

ADIF is state-run rail administrator in Spain.

In recent months several train accidents have occurred in Europe. In July about two dozen people were killed and half ton others injured in collision of two passenger trains in rural area of southeastern Italy.

Three were killed and several others were injured in June this year when a passenger train crashed in eastern Belgium.

In 2013 about 80 people were killed and 144 others were injured in Galicia when a train slammed into a well near Santiago de Compostela.

Investigation found the train crossed the speed limit while approaching a curve. Driver Francisco Jose Garzon was charged with 80 counts of homicide by professional recklessness. It was one of the worst train accidents in Spain.
