After getting diagnosed with breast cancer last fall – a devastating surprise, which came as the result of an on-air mammogram – ABC news correspondent Amy Robach has been juggling work, family, appearances and her grueling treatments.
“I just finished my fourth round of chemotherapy,” Robach, 41, said at the Jefferson Awards for Public Service in New York on Wednesday, where husband Andrew Shue was receiving an award for his organization Do Something.
Despite her illness, things have been non-stop for Robach. “I just got back from reporting in Russia,” says the journalist, who traveled to Sochi in February to cover the Olympics.
The mother of two and stepmom to Shue’s three sons, admits the busy schedule on top of cancer treatment is starting to take a toll.
“I’m at that stage where I can’t wait to get home,” she says, “I’m in the thick of it.”
Fellow journalist, Tom Brokaw, who revealed his own battle with multi myeloma in February, praised Robach’s strength in her very public battle.
“There’s a lot of people who are going through this and just because I have a high profile doesn’t mean I should get all the attention,” Brokaw, 74, said referencing his own cancer battle. “But Amy’s a different matter. She was able to put mammograms on the agenda. That’s a good thing.”
And like her colleague, Robach isn’t letting cancer slow her down. When she’s not on the air, “I’m taking a lot of naps,” she says. “But I’m going to keep working and working through it.”
