Paul Lambert: Proud of 4-1 win over Norwich

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes his side were “excellent” in their 4-1 win over Norwich City at Villa Park.

Despite going 1-0 down after three minutes in Sunday’s Premier League encounter, Villa were in rampant mood and gained a valuable three points thanks to a Christian Benteke brace, a Leandro Bacuna strike and a Sebastien Bassong own goal.

The Villians’ performance earned the approval of Lambert, who was proud of his team’s comeback, reserving special praise for the goals of Bacuna and Benteke – with the Belgian scoring an acrobatic equaliser in the 25th minute.

“Today we had a terrible start, but all credit to the team – we rode back really, really well,” he told Sky Sports.

Comeback delights Lambert

“The lads never really show that they are down and they keep on going. I thought all the goals were fantastic.

“If you look at the third one (Bacuna’s goal), the counter attack and the quickness of it, it was fantastic. It was a brilliant team goal and Christian’s overhead kick was sensational.”

The Scot believes that the win was vital for Villa’s hopes of remaining in the division and insists his side has the quality to progress up the league.

“To win anyway was important, to win games in this league is really tough and hopefully we can keep carrying on,” he said.

“We’re a group that tries to look forward than down, we try and get the next team above us. If we do that, then great. It’s important to keep that belief.

“They’re a young group and they need a bit of help sometimes. For effort and energy, they were excellent.

“The biggest thing is that we’re playing well. Even up at Everton, we played well but we were beaten by a wonder goal. The performances haven’t been too bad and we should have got more than what we have, but today I thought we were excellent.”
